Music Intent
Intent:
At Thorngumbald Primary School, we want children to have a sound knowledge and understanding of music as we recognise that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Our music curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and an improved well-being. We aim to promote a love of music across a broadened curriculum. We believe that a high quality music education increases our pupils’ self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement and we consider our musical curriculum embodies and reflects this.
Implementation:
We at Thorngumbald Primary School implement music through the program SingUp, this programme helps us produce inclusive lessons for all children allowing them to access the musical curriculum in a fun and engaging way. SingUp lessons are planned in sequences to provide children of all year groups with the opportunities to review, remember, deepen and apply their understanding. The elements of music are taught in classroom lessons so that children are able to use and apply some of the musical vocabulary to a range of songs helping them understand how songs are made, played, and analysed. In the classroom children learn the skills for how to play the glockenspiel, recorder and the violin. We strive to give our children a variety of opportunities to enhance their musical knowledge by peripatetic teachers coming into school to teach individual instruments, musical assemblies with professional musicians and bands and a variety of performance opportunities. Scope for children’s participation and wider opportunities for performing to greater audiences will be increased and therefore musical benefits greatened.
Impact:
Music at Thorngumbald allows the children the opportunity to foster their instrumental flare and use their skills as a form of expression. It encourages children to develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to children individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Music is a key element for us as a school as it to encourages them to have a love and passion for music and learning. It helps them to blossom either as a listener, creator or performer. At Thorngumbald Primary School we wish to ignite a musical spark in every child to help positively develop an ongoing interest and appreciation in their later life.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities
At Thorngumbald Primary School we take pride in offering our pupils the opportunity to develop their music knowledge through peripatetic teaching. These opportunities will help pupils to learn how to play and perform in an ensemble as well as individually. Pupils will develop their understanding of the elements of music and how they relate to each other. At the end of every term, pupils will perform to their parents and carers, showcasing their talents.
