Pupil Premium

At Thorngumbald Primary School, we want every child to feel known, valued and able to shine. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to achieve well, develop their strengths and take part fully in school life, whatever their circumstances.

Pupil Premium is additional funding provided by the Department for Education to support the education and outcomes of disadvantaged pupils. It is used as part of our wider school improvement work to make sure that all children can access high-quality teaching, appropriate support and the opportunities they need to thrive.

Our approach is not about putting children into boxes or making assumptions about what they need. We look carefully at our pupils, our community and the barriers that may affect learning, attendance, wellbeing or participation, and use evidence alongside our professional knowledge to decide where support will have the greatest impact.

This may include investment in:

• high-quality teaching and professional development;
• targeted academic support, including additional teaching and intervention;
• support for attendance, engagement, wellbeing and regulation;
• resources and opportunities that help children participate fully in school life;
• enrichment and wider experiences that develop confidence, aspiration and a sense of belonging.

Pupil Premium funding is not an individual budget for each eligible child. We use the funding strategically to support disadvantaged pupils as a group and, where appropriate, to provide targeted support for individual children according to their needs.

Our three-year Pupil Premium Strategy sets out the challenges we have identified, the approaches we are taking, the outcomes we want to achieve and how we will evaluate the impact of our work. We review and update our strategy annually in line with Department for Education requirements.

Could your child be eligible?

If you think your child may be eligible for Targeted Free School Meals and therefore Pupil Premium, please contact East Riding of Yorkshire Council or apply online.

From September 2026, there are two categories of benefits-based Free School Meals:

• Targeted Free School Meals – for children in households receiving Universal Credit with annual earned income of £7,400 or less. Children eligible under this category may also attract Pupil Premium funding for their school.
• Expanded Free School Meals – for children in households receiving Universal Credit with annual earned income above £7,400. Children eligible under this new category receive a free school meal, but this does not attract Pupil Premium funding.

Other eligibility routes also apply, including certain groups of children in receipt of other qualifying benefits or support.
