At Thorngumbald Primary School, we are passionate about supporting every child on their unique journey through school. We seek to personalise children's journey of learning during their time with us to ensure that they make the best possible progress and we do this by getting to know them as well as possible as learners. As a learning community, we have reflected carefully on what we want to know about our children's learning and how we will use this knowledge to help us to make a difference to the education we provide within school. Ultimately, we want to know where the challenges are, how our children develop over time, where to focus our efforts and whether or not these actions have been effective.

Year 4 Times Table Check:

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a Key Stage 2 assessment to be taken by pupils at the end of Year 4. The MTC’s purpose is to ensure the times tables knowledge is at the expected level. The Multiplication Times Tables Check is an online test where the children are asked 25 questions on times tables 2 to 12. For every question, the children have 6 seconds to answer, and in between the questions, there is a 3-second rest. Questions about the 6, 7, 8, 9, and 12 times table come up more often. The questions are generated randomly based on the rules of the MTC.

In 2024, the average raw score of a child at Thorngumbald was 19.2 out of a possible 25 marks compared with 20.4 at LA and 20.6 Nationally.

Year 1 Phonics:

The Phonics Screening Check is a test for children in Year 1. Children take it during June in a one-to-one setting with a teacher. Whilst children learn phonics to help them with both word reading and spelling, the Phonics Screening Check only tests their skills at word reading.

Children are defined as having reached a Good Level of Development (GLD) at the end of the EYFS if they have achieved at least the expected level for the ELGs in the prime areas of learning and the specific areas of mathematics and literacy.

What are SATs?

SATs are statutory assessments carried out by all state schools. They assess how a child’s performance compares nationally with that of other children in the same year group. Each child is assessed at the end of Key Stage 1 (KS1) during Year 2.

Further SATs testing takes place at Key Stage 2 (KS2), when, except in certain circumstances, each child takes part in National Curriculum tests in English, maths and grammar, punctuation and spelling at the end of their primary school education in Year 6.

The primary school performance tables provide information on the achievements of pupils in primary schools, how they compare with other schools in the local authority (LA) area and in England as a whole.

The data can be viewed and downloaded from the performance tables section of the Department for Education website.

The tables show:

Results from the KS2 tests in reading, mathematics and grammar, punctuation and spelling.
KS2 teacher assessments in English, reading, writing, mathematics and science.
KS1-2 progress measures in reading, writing and mathematics.
KS1-2 value added.

They also include key measures for sub-groups of pupils in each school, including disadvantaged pupils, low, middle and high attaining pupils, boys, girls, pupils with English as an additional language and pupils who have been in the school throughout the whole of years 5 and 6 (non-mobile pupils).

They are marked externally and the results sent to schools. Before the end of the summer term, your child’s school will send you a report. The report will include test results and teacher assessment judgements. Your child’s teacher forms the teacher assessment judgements. They judge what your child has achieved in maths, reading, writing and science at the end of Year 6.

Together, these tests and assessments should provide you with a good sense of the standard that your child is working at in these subjects.
