Neurodiversity at Thorngumbald Primary

Here at Thorngumbald we celebrate and support neurodiversity, recognising that every child is unique in the way they think, learn, and experience the world. As a nurturing, neurodivergent-friendly school, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where all children can thrive, feel valued, and reach their full potential.

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity refers to the natural differences in how people’s brains work. Some children may be diagnosed with conditions such as Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, or other neurological variations. These differences are not deficits but part of the rich diversity of human thinking and learning styles.

Our Commitment to a Neurodivergent-Friendly School

We strive to ensure that every child feels safe, supported, and empowered in our school. We do this by:

  • Making Reasonable Adjustments: We adapt our teaching methods, learning spaces, and routines to support the needs of neurodivergent children.
  • Providing a Nurturing Environment: Our staff are trained to understand and support neurodivergent learners with empathy and care.
  • Flexible Learning Approaches: We recognise that children learn in different ways, and we personalise learning where possible to help every child succeed.
  • Calm and Sensory-Friendly Spaces: We provide quiet areas and sensory-friendly classrooms to support regulation and comfort.

Encouraging Peer Understanding: Through assemblies, lessons, and activities, we teach all children about neurodiversity to promote acceptance and inclusion.

Support for Neurodivergent Pupils

We work closely with families, external professionals, and specialist services to ensure that children receive the best possible support. This may include:

  • Individualised Learning Plans tailored to each child’s strengths and needs.
  • Emotional and Social Support including small group interventions and mentoring.
  • Collaboration with Parents valuing your insights and working in partnership to support your child’s education.
