The following link is a really useful website which has lots of helpful guides and tools to enable you to provide your child with key skills to make your child's journey to Foundation as easy and smooth as possible:
How can you support your child as they start school?
- Talk about school! Encourage your child to talk about the things they are excited about and any worries they might have. When they start school, encourage them to tell you about their day and always feel free to chat to us on the gate if you need to.
- Encourage toileting, dressing and eating independently.
- Help your child to be able to put on their coat and zip it up independently.
- Read their weekly home reading book (at the beginning of Reception, your child will receive a book without words. This is to encourage story telling, use of language and comprehension before they begin to learn to read).
What will your child be doing during their first week at school?
- Getting to know each other, the Teachers and our Class Bear.
- Circle games, songs, stories, small group Maths and Phonics activities.
- Getting to know the classroom and classroom rules.
- Getting to know the routines.
- Earning their first Dojo!
What will your child need on their first day of school?
- Themselves!
- A book bag.
- A water bottle.
- The children will not need their PE kit for the first few weeks.
- We ask that you send a bag of spare clothes with your child (including socks and underwear) that can be left at School. Although we have some spare clothes, ensuring they are the correct size can be tricky.
Uniform
A comprehensive range of school uniform items can be purchased direct from Steady School and Sportswear:

Items include sweatshirts, cardigans, polo shirts and PE kit; fleeces, jackets and reading book bags are also available.
However your supermarket or high street store uniform is perfectly fine this includes things like cardigans – as long as they are blue.
Please name everything!
PE Kit
For PE, both boys and girls wear black shorts/jogging bottoms and white T-shirts. The children can also wear a black tracksuit top for the cold weather.
The children will come to school in their uniform and get changed at school. This will promote independence and encourage the children to look after their belongings.
We will let you know what day this is when your child starts in September. We usually leave a few weeks to settle in before we start PE.
Children can bring in their own waterproofs and wellies for messy outdoor play!
We do have aprons and wellies they can borrow too.
Lunchtimes
A Day in Reception!
Once the children are settled, confident and used to their new surroundings, a normal day in Reception will look like this! This is built up over time and will begin with very short focused activities at the beginning of the year:
- Morning jobs.
- Wake Up Shake Up, register, calendar.
- Phonics.
- Snack.
- Choosing Time (Independent learning in provision areas, free flow indoor and outdoor).
- Maths.
- Lunch.
- Adult Initiated Activity (Understanding the World, PE twice a week, Expressive Arts and Design).
- Choosing Time (Independent learning in provision areas, free flow indoor and outdoor).
- Story.
- Guided reading is done during provision in small groups.

The Reception Curriculum
In Reception, we assess 17 areas of child development which come under seven main areas of development.
Your child will learn through a combination of child-led activities (choosing time) and adult-led activities.
During choosing time the children can choose which area they would like to learn in. These areas are enhanced to support the children’s progress throughout the year.
There will be a lot of choosing time to start with to ease the transition from Nursery and this will then slowly decrease, however they will have choosing time all year and in Year 1 too!
