Intent:

 

Our aim at Thorngumbald Primary School is to equip our children with the skills, knowledge, understanding and emotions to enable them to play a positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being. Our RSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community.

 

Implementation:

 

At Thorngumbald Primary, our vision is to provide a safe, caring and inspiring environment where children are supported, challenged, and valued personally and academically so they can be the best they can be. At Key Stage 1 and 2, RSE is taught through our clear and comprehensive PSHE curriculum. We use the programme Jigsaw to help us promote positive values and attitudes throughout every aspect of school life. This is mirrored with our school values:

 

-S: Safety- We aim to teach the children how to be safe in society, with others and also to be safe on the internet.

-T: Teamwork- We encourage the pupils to work collectively and share ideas. We teach them that everyone should be valued and has a place in our community.

-A: Aspirations- We encourage the pupils to believe in themselves and to aim high.

-R: Resilience- We aim to give them strategies to help them be resilient when things are tough.

 

PSHE and RSE learning is taught within the concepts of family life, taking care to promote tolerance and respect for others. We understand families take many different forms. We reflect sensitively that some children may have a different structure of support around them. We invite visitors throughout the year (e.g. NSPCC, School Nurse, PCSO) to help support our curriculum by delivering workshops or assemblies. When appropriate, we make links with other curriculum subject areas e.g. we teach e-safety through Computing. We ensure we cover the Health and Well-Being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World Learning Opportunities using Jigsaw, which comprehensively covers the statutory Health Education and Relationships Education guidance.

 

Impact:

 

Our curriculum allows the children to develop their skills and attributes which help them to navigate through modern day life. By the time the children leave our school, they will:

• Be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society.
• Appreciate difference and diversity.
• Recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
• Be able to understand and manage their emotions and wellbeing.
• Be able to develop positive, healthy relationships with their peers both now and in the future.
• Have respect for themselves and others.
