Maths Intent
At Thorngumbald Primary School we make mathematics exciting, enjoyable and stimulating. We provide quality teaching which is engaging, interactive and builds upon children’s prior learning. We understand that Mathematics is vital to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. We aim to ensure that our Mathematics curriculum is inclusive for all pupils and encourages them to make rich connections and become fluent in the essentials of mathematics, through varied and regular practice. We want our children to be able to reason mathematically by suggesting solutions and to be able to be resilient in trying out different approaches to problems. We also encourage children to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects. At our school we want to maximise the outcomes for our children so that they know more, remember more and understand more.
The intent of our mathematics curriculum is to design an enjoyable curriculum, which is accessible to all and will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement. Our mathematics policy and progression ladder ensures that there is consistency in our maths teaching and the children are provided with age appropriate knowledge and skill in order to enable them to reach their full potential. We intend to provide pupils with the opportunities to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills so that they become confident mathematicians who are able to apply their mathematical knowledge across the curriculum.
