Introducing Our School Dog!
We are thrilled to announce that Thorngumbald Primary School is embracing an exciting new addition to our community - a school dog!
As the proud owner of this pup, Ralph, I will be overseeing all aspects of his integration into school life. Why a school dog, you may wonder? Well, after extensive research, agreement from our governors and visits to other schools with established programs, we are convinced of the numerous benefits:
- Calming Influence: Particularly beneficial for students facing behavioural or learning challenges.
- Encouraging Participation: Our dog will help draw out even the most reserved children, promoting engagement and interaction.
- Fostering Responsibility: Caring for Ralph will instil a sense of accountability among our students.
- Enhanced Learning: Interacting with animals can spark curiosity and enthusiasm, motivating our children to explore and learn.
- Life Lessons: Our school dog will teach invaluable lessons in compassion, nurturing, and respect for all living beings.
- Literacy Support: Studies have shown that reading to a non-judgemental listener like a dog can significantly boost children's confidence and literacy skills.
- Improved Attendance: The presence of a beloved school dog can contribute to a more positive school experience, encouraging regular attendance.
Rest assured, the well-being and safety of our students are paramount. Our puppy - Ralph will undergo training approved by the Kennel Club and regular temperament assessments. Vaccination records will be meticulously maintained, and the school has implemented a comprehensive risk assessment plan.
During the initial phase, Ralph will primarily reside in my office, gradually acclimating to the school environment and forming bonds with students. He has already had a couple of visits to see how he would cope. Once fully trained and at least 12 months old, he may gradually expand its presence to areas like the library and with pastoral staff, always under close supervision and on a short lead.
We understand that interacting with animals may not be suitable for every child. If you prefer that your child not participate in activities involving the school dog, please reach out to us via email or class dojo. Additionally, please ensure that the school is aware of any allergies or medical concerns your child may have.
